Campos may miss pre-season, but remain confident for season-opener

Campos Meta have conceded that they may well miss all of pre-season but remain confident of being on the grid for the season-opener in Bahrain on March 14th.

The admission from Campos has raised speculation that the newly-formed Spanish team is struggling to meet the financial demands necessary to race in Formula 1. Commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone has raised doubts over Campos and fellow newcomers USF1 in regards to their finances in the past couple of weeks, and the bad news from Campos is likely to increase the uncertainty over the team’s future.

Campos’ head of strategy Daniel Elsen has admitted that the team is struggling financially. However, he remains confident that funds will become available, leading to the debut of the team in 2010.

“It’s no secret that right now we are negotiating with investors and sponsors, especially on an international scale,” he explained.

Campos have already signed Bruno Senna for the forthcoming season, but according to Elsen, the Brazilian didn’t bring sponsor funds with him.

“Bruno didn’t come with cash and that’s important.

“We’ve always wanted that from the start.

“Yes, it would bring a lot economically, but our focus is to be ready,’ Elsen added.

Whilst Elsen remains confident of being on the grid, speculation will continue to mount about Campos’ future short and long-term.

A second driver has not been announced as of yet, and is unlikely to be named until assurances over the team’s financial situation has been made, which is likely to be just before the first race of the season in Bahrain.
