USF1 confirm first driver for 2010
USF1 have announced the signing of Jose Maria Lopez as one of their race drivers for the forthcoming Formula 1 season.
Lopez, 26, is the first driver to be confirmed as a race driver for the newly-formed team and brings a good racing pedigree to the team – winning the Renault V6 Championship in 2003, competing in the GP2 series and being a former test driver for the Renault Formula 1 team.
The Argentine will make his racing debut in the season-opener in Bahrain on 14th March, and will become the 24th Argentine to race in Formula 1.
The announcement was actually made by the Argentine President, and he spoke of his delight at the appointment.
“The Argentine government is very happy to get behind this very exciting project and we wish Jose Maria and the team all the best for the 2010 season,” he said.
Lopez also spoke of his joy about making it to the top of the Formula series at last, particularly after missing out on a race seat in 2007.
“This is a truly memorable day for me, my family and the people of Argentina,” said Lopez. “I have been working towards this day all my life and I can’t thank Peter (Windsor) and Ken (Anderson) enough for this opportunity,” he added.
USF1 have not announced a date for revealing their second driver, although, it is understood the team would like an American driver to race for them.
